Best ways to Rehydrate

Holy moly does it get hot where I live in New Orleans!

If you've ever visited here in the summer, you know sweating a lot comes with the territory 💦

🔥 When it’s super hot like this and you're sweating through your Saints shirt ⚜️ (or scrubs in my case), it's important to remember that…

You’re not just losing water—you’re also losing important electrolytes like sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium through sweat 💦

✅ 💧 Stay Hydrated

Obviously,  if you're losing a lot of fluids in the summer heat, you want to try your best to stay well hydrated.

However, when you're trying to rehydrate, you don't just want to drink plain water ❌💧

Drinking large amounts of plain water without replacing electrolytes can, in rare cases, contribute to hyponatremia (low blood sodium), which can become serious or even life-threatening. ⚠️

🥥 My Favorite Ways To Rehydrate

In order to replenish my electrolytes, I personally like to drink coconut water 🥥 (in addition to drinking some regular water).

Coconut water is rich in potassium and magnesium ✅

If I've really been sweating a lot and need to replenish sodium, sometimes I’ll also add a small pinch of salt to it 🧂

Lastly, consuming hydrating foods like watermelon, oranges, cucumbers, and berries can be helpful 🍉

❤️ A Quick Reminder

⚠️ If you have heart disease, kidney disease, or have been told to limit sodium, talk with your physician before intentionally increasing your salt intake.

👨‍⚕️ Bottom Line

☀️ Hydration isn’t just about drinking more water...it’s about replacing what you lose.

A balance of water, electrolytes, and hydrating foods is ideal ✅
