If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably seen someone standing on a vibration plate claiming it builds bone, burns fat, and can fix everything short of our crumbling healthcare system 🏥.
So… do they actually work?
Short answer: maybe — but not the way you think.
🦴 Bone Density:
Believe it or not, there is actually some data showing that consistent high-frequency (low magnitude) whole body vibration may help improve bone density in specific populations (older adults, sedentary individuals). I know…surprising. The little vibrations help stimulate new bone formation 🦴.
👉 For more info about the connection between vibration and bone density, check out this abstract: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36282343
❌ However, whole body vibration is not a replacement for resistance training or impact loading.
💪 Muscle Strength:
You might see small improvements — mostly in deconditioned individuals.
If you already lift weights, the effect is minimal ❌
✅ Bowel Motility:
There is actually evidence that shows the vibrations can potentially help with constipation (PMID: 22966839). I've actually seen people sit on them in the morning to stimulate a bowel movement… and they claim it actually works.
🔥 Fat Loss:
I wish I had better news, but there is no meaningful evidence that standing and shaking significantly reduces body fat percentage. It certainly does not replace resistance training and good nutrition 💪🥘.
⚖️ Balance & Stability:
Yes, there is evidence that vibration plates can help with balance and stability, particularly in older adults. So for those with balance and stability issues, vibration plate therapy may be something to discuss with your doctor or physical therapist.

🚨 Bottom Line:
Vibration plates are a tool, not a shortcut. If someone is using one in addition to real strength training, great. If they’re using it instead of strength training, that’s a problem.
The fundamentals still win:
Lift. Load. Progress. Recover.
As always — boring works.
If you want to try a vibration plate, they can be purchased for as little as $59 on Amazon and should be used about 10-15 minutes per day for three times a week at first.
